Heroes in the Modern World
The super-powered heroes of the modern era can trace their lineage back to ancient mythologies featuring such characters as Gilgamesh and Heracles. Stories of heroes who fight injustice span cultural boundaries, from Zatoichi the blind swordsman of Japan to Robin Hood, famed vigilante archer of Nottinghamshire.
People have been enthralled by heroic feats of prowess and triumph over adversity since the first caveman painted a hunting scene on his cave wall. It's really no wonder people of all ages still find the storytelling in graphic novels and comic books thrilling and compelling. We are drawn to stories of heroes and villains.
A Focus on Characters
The primary focus of this rules expansion is on the creation of characters with the uncanny powers and abilities to take on heroic or villainous roles in a larger-than-life story.
Built to Integrate with ’Verses
This ’Verses expansion opens up the varied and unpredictable world of super-powered heroes for your table-top adventures. By keeping its focus narrowly on how super-powers work within the rules set out in ’Verses Core, this expansion is compatible with any other ’Verses setting. While the focus here is on heroes in the modern world, nothing stops you from playing this expansion in past or far-future settings. Indeed, time-travel is a common trope in many super-powered hero stories, and the frameworks provided in ’Verses Core for play across technology levels and time periods makes these sorts of stories accessible to GMs & players in this Heroes expansion.
The Real Wide World as Backdrop
Campaigns involving modern-day super-powered heroes can be easy to set up, since they can use player's real social and physical environs as their background and setting. While rich urban environments are classic stomping grounds in comic books, heroes can live anywhere and GMs are encouraged to apply their worldbuilding to whatever setting they and their players find compelling. Instead of providing lists of items and equipment, players are encouraged to use real-world online product listings as sources. GMs can interpolate stats from the modern items listed in the ’Verses Core rules.
